The B1 Preliminary (PET) 

Level B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

The B1 Preliminary (PET) shows that you have mastered the basics of English and have now practical language skills for everyday use. The exam tests all four English language skills – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

TheB1 Preliminary (PET) certificate shows that you can:

  • read simple textbooks and articles in English
  • write letters and emails on everyday subjects
  • understand factual information
  • show awareness of opinions and mood in spoken and written English

The Exam Format

Cambridge exams are designed to ensure standardised test conditions for people of all linguistic backgrounds and nationalities and are supported by a dedicated global research programme. 

Duration: 45 minutes 

Target: Shows you can read and understand the main points from signs, newspapers and magazines.

Target: Shows you can use vocabulary and structure correctly.

Target: You have to be able to follow and understand a range of spoken materials including announcements and discussions about everyday life.

Duration: 12-17 minutes

Target: Shows how good your spoken English is as you take part in conversation by asking/answering questions and talking, for example, about your likes and dislikes. Your Speaking test will be conducted face to face with one or two other candidates and two examiners. This makes your test more realistic and more reliable.
